Cleaning with Bleach

If you are cleaning with bleach, making some homemade cleaning products or just using commercial cleaning products BEWARE!

Mixing some common cleaners can be toxic!

Never mix:

Ammonia with bleach = dangerous chlorine gas

Vinegar with bleach = toxic chlorine gas

Dishsoap with ammonia = toxic fumes

Commercial cleaners with other commercial cleaners = toxic fumes

Chlorine Bleach with acids (like vinegar, window cleaners, dishwasher detergents, toilet bowl cleaners, drain cleaners, lime/rust/calcium removal products, brick and concrete cleaners, oven cleaners, hydrogen peroxide, insecticides ) Source.

Vinegar with hydrogen peroxide = peracetic acid

Bleach and ammonia by themselves are also a pretty toxic cleaner.

Why are these fumes harmful?

These toxic gases and fumes can cause respiratory issues, headaches, skin burns, damage to nervous system, exacerbates asthma, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and in some cases even death.

 

Safer cleaning products:

Baking soda – It’s great for absorbing odors. Put on mattresses, carpets, upholstered furniture etc. Anywhere that needs freshening up. You can also use it to brush your teeth, wash your face.

Vinegar and water for all purpose cleaner combined with nothing else, make it smell better by adding some essential oils, you can also use it to clean your dishwasher, drains, floors, coffeemaker, windows, glassware,and showerheads.

Liquid Castile Soap – mix ¼ cup liquid Castile soap in a bucket of hot water. Use to clean floors, marble countertops, sinks, showers, tubs, ceramic tile, stovetop and vent hood.

Borax – Borax is a naturally occurring salt mineral.  Mix ½ cup Borax with 1 gallon of hot water. Put in spray bottle and use to clean countertops, walls, pots and pans, toilet, and baseboards.

Lemons – You can use lemons to clean faucets, cutting boards, countertops, brighten whites in laundry, freshen garbage disposal. They smell wonderful too!

Oxygen bleach for whitening clothes .It is hydrogen peroxide with some sodium and sometimes carbon added to it to form a compound that releases the hydrogen peroxide when added to water. Source
